Anton Ferdinand Titz Tietz Hoffmeister Dietz 1742 1808 1811
Anton Ferdinand Titz - String Quartet No. 2 in B flat major (of 3 String Quartets, 1808) Anton Ferdinand Titz (or Tietz, or Dietz) (1742 – 1811) was a German composer, violin and viola d'amore player, principally now known for his string quartets. Titz was born in Nuremberg, initially training as a painter before concentrating on music and becoming the organist at St. Sebaldus Church. He lived in St Petersburg for 40 years, working at the court of Catherine II of Russia. He was renowned as a violin and viola d'amore player both as a member of the court orchestra and leader of a chamber ensemble. He received the highest salary ever paid to a court musician in the Neva metropolis. His compositions range from lieder and romances to sonatas for violin and piano, for violin and cello, and for two violins, string quartets and quintets, and symphonies. Many of these works, while being within the Viennese classical period, show early intimations of the Romantic. Some works from his time in St Petersburg have been lost.(Wikipedia) AllMusic, review by James Manheim: “These are not exactly serious works, but they're expansive in scope without being particularly long, and they combine structural intelligence with a kind of low-key humor.”
