Giuseppe Verdi - Don Carlo Ella giammai m´amo (Recorded 1954) My personal opinion: Act III of Verdi´s great opera "Don Carlo" begins with a moving scene of King Philipp II. At dawn, he sits alone in his study, thoughtful, reflecting about himself. He mistrusts his wife Elisabeth, the former fiancee of his son Carlo. A tragical situation, Elisabeth his wife, Carlo his son. "She never loved me" (Ella giammai m´amo) he ponders. He wishes more knowledge of human nature. "Sleep I will found when I will be laid to rest". When bulgarian bass Boris Christoff opened Philipp´s great monolog, he sang with "Morbidezza" and "sotto voce", with a deeply hurt and stifled cry in his voice. Christoff didn´t depend on pure melodiousness, he infolded his voice with a tragic that impressed more than only the disillusion of a cheated man. Even in his pain, he stayed great in public life - the show must go on! The best recordings of Christoff are full of scenic expressiveness, that gave his figures different faces. Christoff as Philipp is totally different from Christoff as Basilio. John Steane: "His first recordings established him brilliant as successor of Chaliapin. They gave us a Boris Godunov, who very soon sang with complete authority, with comparable intensity and with a voice that was distinctive and beautiful, strenght and good-school at once (Re-Translation)" Michael Scott: "His voice is a noble bass". The singer about himself: "I sing my 120 roles with 40 voices, but always you can hear my voice. It´s always me, Boris Christoff, and always, it´s another Boris Christoff. I´ve never sung for money, I refuse to sing roles I´m not interested in". Boris Christoff was a self-confident and remarkable man. He refused to sing Don Giovanni, offered by Karajan - "I´ve never sung a role my voice wasn´t made for!" Some called him arrogant and difficult, others saw in him the greatest bass ever lived. For me, Boris Christoff was a rare singer. A singer, who was powerful on both, stage and record, persuasive and never without suspense. Sometimes, he had a strong inclination to overstatement. But hearing his records, I always feel, he knew what he did. Today, many singers give us disinterested performances. I´ve never heard Christoff singing this way. For this list, I choose him and (sorry for doing that) put on side great basses like Ghiaurov and Ghiuselev, and it would be a remiss not to mention the great Lev Sibiryakov and Mark Reizen. Christoff had made two complete "Don Carlo"-recordings with Gabriele Santini as conductor, 1954 and 1961. I took the first version. THE COMPLETE OVERVIEW: PLEASE GO TO "ALL SINGERS IN THIS LIST"

Charles Gounod - Faust Le veau d´or (Recording date so far unknown) My personal opinion: Chaliapin was the real "Phantom of the opera", just like his contemporary Lon Chaney a man of a thousand faces, a chameleon. His force of suggestibility was stupendous, "he left his audience breathless" wrote Maxim Gorki in "My friend Fedor". Russian born Fedor (or Feodor) Chaliapin was the "Caruso" among basses, at his time a superstar beyond comparison. I only know Chaliapin from his recordings, I don´t rate the 1934 Eisenstein movie "Don Quichotte". Chaliapins own words: "I stood beside myself. Theatre drove me out of my mind." After he saw an opera, he "tried to change the real life into an opera". Indeed, in his recordings he tried to reach a symbiosis of singing and speaking. Chaliapin again: "In opera you have to sing as if you speak!" That makes stunning impression, but it damaged the musicality. In almost every Chaliapin recording I found for myself strange mistakes of breathcontrol and singing on the line. Critic Michael Scott defended him: "It was an effort to gave a new feeling into an old form"(!). This is very interesting, it shows you have to make concession with Chaliapin. Every piece he´d sung became (even on records) a piece of pure vocal acting. Like Carusos stifling sob in Canios lament, Chaliapin also was imitated by countless successors. Around the first decades in the 20th century it was in vogue to suffer tragic music. What a Pity, because Chaliapins vocal capital was big (although that of Lev Sibiryakov had more substance). But he was anxious to change cantabile music into dramatic life, that´s the way he was! Sometimes he even didn´t cares about note values. We have better (musically) recordings of "La calunnia" or "Madamina", but there´s another important side: Chaliapin never was boring. Each recording is a surprise: What will we hear this time? The singing actor or the acting singer - with this attributes Chaliapin has his place in music history... And certainly in this list! Do you agree with this? Vladimir Kastorsky--bass Date (?) / Vladimir Kastorsky +••.••(...)) was one of a number of outstanding singers associated with the Imperial Russian Opera in St. Petersburg, and, like so many other Russian artists active at that time his records (made in the first decade of the 20th Century) have always fascinated the collector. Possessing an exceptional voice he was one of an important quartet of basses - the others being Feodor Chaliapin, Lev Sibiryakov, and Konstantin Serebriakov - who saw the commencement of an artistic and vocal line that extended into the late 20th century ...
