Lenneke Ruiten Henriette Bonde Hansen Hansen Handel Rameau Debussy Meyerbeer Shepherd Salzburg Festival Scala 1775 1963 1977 1993 2004 2013 2014 2015
SOPRANO DUET SONGBIRDS: Lenneke Ruiten is a Dutch soprano who was born in Velsen in 1977. She sang regularly in regional houses until breakthrough in 2013 when she jumped in as Zerbinetta in Munich. Major debuts that followed included the Salzburg Festival (Donna Anna in 2014), La Scala (Giunia in 2015), the Aix-en-Provence and Edinburgh Festivals (Fiordiligi). Ruiten is a regular in Stuttgart, where she has sung Zerbinetta, Sophie, Gilda, and Pamina. Other roles so far include lots of Mozart (Konstanze, Aspasia, Elettra, Madame Herz, Susanna, Despina, and Donna Elvira) and Handel (Alcina, Almirena, Armida, Angelica), as well as Lucia, Ophelia, Marguerite de Valois, Marzelline, Agathe, and Rameau's La Folie. Henriette Bonde-Hansen was born on the island of Funen in Denmark in 1963. She trained in Copenhagen and made her debut in 1993 as Adele in "Die Fledermaus." She appeared regularly at the Royal Danish Opera (Susanna, Zerlina, Gilda, Marzelline, Juliette) and has sung Mozart and works by bel canto composers all over Europe, as well as operas by Debussy, Handel, and Meyerbeer. THE MUSIC: Mozart's 1775 pastoral opera seria "Il re pastore" K.208 was commissioned for a visit by the Archduke of Austria to Salzburg, where it had its premiere. The small cast has three sopranos (Elisa, Tamiri, and the leading role of Aminta, written for a castrato) and two tenors. The plot revolves around Aminta's discovery that he is more than a simple shepherd, but in fact the heir to the throne of Sidon, and how he is torn between fulfilling that royal duty and his love for the shepherdess Elisa. Act One ends with a spectacular duet between the two characters — the soprano voices interweave elaborately and conclude with an intricate double cadenza.
