Johann Bernhard Bach Bach Sassonia 1524 1676 1749
Score/Partitura: (http•••) A choral by J.B.Bach, second cousin to Johann Sebastian, son and father himself of musicians and cembalist at John William III, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach's court. The choral takes inspiration from one of the first hymns by Martin Luther, often referred to as "Luther's judgement hymn". Here's the translation of the text of the hymn: 1. Dear Christians, one and all rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God hath done, How his right arm the victory won; Right dearly it hath cost him. 2. Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay, Death brooded darkly o'er me; Sin was my torment night and day, Therein my mother bore me. Deeper and deeper still I fell, Life was become a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. 3. My good works could avail me naught, For they with sin were stained; Free-will against God's judgment fought, And dead to good remained. Grief drove me to despair, and I Had nothing left me but to die, To hell I fast was sinking.

This Dance is normally played by guitar duo, or duo with violin or cello, but I was accustomed to listen to solo guitar version since I was studying in Salzburg under Maestro Joaquin Clerch who was very famous for the powerful and master arrangement of this piece. I played this at the first time maybe in 2008 or 2009, but this time I re-write the transcription more simple. When we play this piece as duo, it goes very much with sparks and fire. I do also. On the other hand, I chose to express more song-like image or polyphonic resonance for solo guitar version, because Manuel de Falla had held the first Cante Jondo Competition with the poet Garcia Lorca. Music score of this arrangement is on the Gendai Guitar magazine in April 2021. Daisuke Suzuki is known for his rich tone, musical sensitivity and strong feeling for tonal color, supported a masterful technique. Since 1993, beginning with his victory at the Citta de Alessandrea, Concorso Internazionale de Chitarra Classica with Omággio a Andrés Segovia in Italy, Suzuki’s international activities have earned him great recognition both in Japan and abroad. Suzuki is considered the foremost interpreter of the music of Toru Takemitsu, which was acclaimed by The composer who praised his playing, saying, “one rarely has the opportunity to hear a performance like his.” And that gave him an honor to perform in the Saito Kinen Festival’s Toru Takemitsu Memorial Concert (1997), as well as in memorial concerts in 1998~2010. In 1999, he played a recital on the anniversary of Takemitsu’s death in Tokyo Opera City concert hall, ‘Takemitsu Memorial,’ and also performed his guitar concerto, ‘To the edge of dream,’ in 2003. Nowadays many Japanese composers offered him to play premiere of their works and recordings, which also includes guitar concertos. Suzuki has released numerous recordings, including Complete Collection of Guitar Works by Toru Takemitsu (1997). Other CDs include “Homage to Catalonia” which was awarded the ‘Art Work Prize of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ in 2005, After the first release of “The Cinema Paradise” which is covered album of film music for solo guitar, it has been released four more CDs of the same series by 2015.
This one wasn’t too frustrating to record! Might be a lil loud, sorry. Ravel actually intended for this to be sightread *laughs in worked on this for three weeks* From what I heard, the anti-trans Arkansas bill passed, overriding the governor’s surprising veto. It was a small victory followed by a great loss. I’m praying for trans youth in Arkansas right now. Stay safe. Recorded April 9th, 2021.

It premiered in Moscow on January 31, 1947 and then was presented in Leningrad on March 9 of the same year. It is composed for an extended string orchestra. A challenge for the presentation of a heroic work. Called by an orchestra conductor as the "Spanish" for the use of Hispanic themes and for the origin of the work: In the month of May of 1939, Popov had written the soundtrack of a film entitled "Spain". It was a report made during the Spanish Civil War, describing the tragedy of the nation. The music was so successful that Popov made a suite entitled "Spain" Op.28, consisting of seven symphonic fragments. According to the diary written by the composer, on September 17, 1939, he intends to perform a Concerto grosso based on the fragments for strings of his work "Spain". The first movement ends in the month of October, but then leaves the work. In the month of September 1944 he continued, finishing the score on September 21, 1946. Then he changed the name to Symphony No. 3 "Heroic" and dedicating it to his friend Shostakovich. The first movement begins with a solemn theme reflecting the heroism that will be the basis of the symphony. It is combined with a more nervous secondary theme. Dragged by the violins the theme grows to its fullest expression, then return to the calm with which the coda ends. The second movement presents a lively theme in which we can see the popular twists of the Castilian jota, one of the reasons for being known as the Spanish symphony. In the central part we find a requiem for the fallen heroes based on the Basque folk song, Argizagi ederra (the beautiful moon). The theme is presented by the violas in their low register. Then the complete strings are added. It continues with a brief development in a dramatic way to return to the initial theme. The third movement corresponds to the scherzo of the work. It is written in the form of a rondo and is based on the themes of three dances. Among them are a contrapás, a typical Catalan dance and a Castilian tune, which alternate. The fourth movement begins with a dense sad melody in the cellos and double basses. When the violas and violins join, it acquires amplitude, increasing its drama. It is the longest movement, constituting the dramatic core of the work. It develops through increasingly intense sound waves until it reaches its peak. The last movement presents us with the triumphal end of the work. The two themes of the first movement reappear. The second theme appears first, followed by a motif in the form of a march announcing the victory. The main theme of the work, that of heroism, is emphasized. The initial theme is taken by the entire orchestra in the coda as a symbol of courage. The premiere of the work was a success but for reasons unknown, their discussion at the meeting for the Stalin Awards was postponed to 1947. The events that took place in 1948 for the performance of Vano Muradelli's opera, condemned the most important Soviet composers. Popov was criticized as an anti-nationalist formalist in need of a reconversion of his style. Picture: "The Third of May 1808" (1814) by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya.
