Philippe Bellenot Niedermeyer Gigout Massenet Widor Marmontel Saint Sulpice 1808 1860 1885 1894 1923 1928
Phillip Sear plays a serenade from 1894 by the French pianist, organist and choir director Philippe Bellenot +••.••(...)). / Philippe Bellenot +••.••(...)) was born in Paris. He studied first at the École Niedermeyer, the famous school for the study and practice of church music, where he studied organ under Gigout; and he then went to the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Massenet. He spent all of his working life at Saint-Sulpice, where he spent nearly 50 years working in various capacities under Widor. He wrote many liturgical works, but also wrote for the stage (including an opera and a Japanese musical play) and piano music. One of his later works was an oratorio to mark the beatification of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux in 1923. He married a pianist pupil of Antoine Marmontel, but suffered the sadness of losing his only child to tuberculosis, aged just 6. He must have been quite well-to-do (his mother was a wealthy heiress), as he owned two properties, both with organs installed, and entertained prominent artists and musicians at them. One of the organs was a Cavaille-Coll, which was later reinstalled in the Eglise Sainte-Marie des Vallées in Colombes. Although there is no reference to it in the title, the middle section of the piece has a distinct Spanish tinge. Therefore, I have chosen for my thumbnail 'Spanish Serenade' by the German Romanticist painter Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885). / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
