Christian Teilman Ole Bull Grieg Johan Svendsen 1810 1843 1849 1909
The Norwegian composer Christian Teilman +••.••(...)) was from a family with Danish origins. He was born six weeks after Grieg, and outlived him by two years - but unlike his contemporary he is forgotten, at least outside Norway. In his lifetime he was apparently a household name there, and wrote a lot of dance and special-occasion music, as well as an operetta. His piano music is often reminiscent of Grieg, but totally overshadowed by him, alas. I think Grieg would have been happy to have written this attractive arrangement of a well-known melody from 1849 - 'The Herd-girl's Sunday' - by the Norwegian violinist Ole Bull +••.••(...)). This was popularized in an arrangement for violin and orchestra by Johan Svendsen - which (though he is not credited) you can see here: (http•••) Incidentally, the cover art for the score I have used for my video shows a young goatherd sitting with her flock overlooking a fjord. My thumbnail features just the goatherd (colourized). / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
Christian Teilman Henryk Wieniawski Grieg 1835 1843 1877 1909
The Norwegian composer Christian Teilman +••.••(...)) was from a family with Danish origins. He was born six weeks after Grieg, and outlived him by two years - but unlike his contemporary he is forgotten, at least outside Norway. In his lifetime he was apparently a household name there, and wrote a lot of dance and special-occasion music, as well as an operetta. Teilman wrote both nationalistic and -non-nationalistic music, and this falls into the latter class. Pieces called 'Souvenir de xx' (or similar) where xx was a famous instrumentalist or singer were popular in the 19th century - where you could only hear artists live. They did not have stacks of CDs on sale at the end of their performances, but very often, soon after the concerts, publishers would rush out souvenir editions of pieces performed by the artists for people to take home. Teilman would have had the opportunity to see the great Polish violinist Henryk Wieniawski +••.••(...)) play live - for example, Wieniawski performed in a duo with Grieg in Christiania in 1877, and had visited Norway regularly from the 1860s on. From the opus number, I guess that this piece would have been written in the 1890s, well after Wieniawski's death, but it certainly captures the violinistic style and the energy of Wieniawski's own music. / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
Christian Teilman Grieg 1843 1907 1909 2010
The Norwegian composer Christian Teilman +••.••(...)) was from a family with Danish origins. He was born six weeks after Grieg, and outlived him by two years - but unlike his contemporary he is forgotten, at least outside Norway. In his lifetime he was apparently a household name there, and wrote a lot of dance and special-occasion music, as well as an operetta. This piece, with its Hardanger fiddle evocations, is reminiscent of Grieg. The cover art of this 1907 piece has a lurid picture of a troll on a glacier, which put me in mind of the recent Norwegian film Trollhunter (Trolljegeren) from 2010, which I happened to see on TV a few days before recording this video. Troldheimen is also a mountain range in Norway, near Sundal. My apologies for the incorrect spelling of the title on the video itself!
