Hekking Anton Hekking Handel Bach 1909
Anton Hekking, cello, plays "Laschia ch'io pianga" from Handel's "Rinaldo" on Anker 9058-II, probably recorded around 1909. The label incorrectly attributes this to Bach.
Camille Saint Saëns André Hekking Théodore Dubois Gabriel Fauré 1877 1919
Camille Saint-Saëns wrote this piece towards the end of his life (his composing career spanned over seventy years) as op. 158 in 1919. It is typical of his late work in that he returned to more simple forms and textures. This "prayer" was originally for the 'cellist André Hekking and has been recorded by some of the world's great 'cellists, but this version is for viola and organ and retains most of the original writing; a few passages have to be taken up an octave where they honestly project better through the organ writing, which is fortunately very controlled. Saint-Saëns only worked at churches through 1877 but he was organist at La Madeleine in Paris, succeeded by Théodore Dubois and then Gabriel Fauré.
Camille Saint Saëns André Hekking Mustel Sanders 1835 1866 1887 1919 1921 1925 2013
The internationally renowned organist and composer Camille Saint-Saëns +••.••(...)) was 84 when this Prayer was published in 1919. It was one of his final compositions. Scored for "Violoncelle et Orgue", the piece was dedicated to André Hekking +••.••(...)), a virtuoso French cellist and professor at the Conservatoire Nationale in Paris. The organ part is printed on two staves, perfectly playable on the keyboard of a reed organ, such as the Mustel harmonium heard here, made in Paris in 1887. The cello part is taken here by the bassoon, played by our friend Deidre Sanders; the harmonium played by Michael Hendron. Thank you Deidre for making music together, the afternoon of 21 July 2013.
