Hi everyone, thank you for 300 subscribers! This video seeks to celebrate this collective milestone and present the Hungarian Rhapsody 19 by Franz Liszt, which I played at an online competition. A few notes on technique: In the rhapsody, one particular passage in the music which served as the greatest challenge for me were these broken octaves in the R.H. For a long while I couldn’t get it right, but it wasn’t impossible, I just had to practice it with correct and effective practicing techniques. There were several techniques that were incredibly beneficial for me in refining this passage, techniques which you can also use in your practicing. Some of these techniques include: Practicing with rhythms: When trying to master a particular passage it's good to be creative with different rhythmic groupings to get the feel of the patterns more. Sometimes I will do two a group, three or four a group; I might play a bunch of notes in the R.H. quickly in the same position, then switch hand positions and repeat. Metronome: definitely experiment with the extremes of the tempo just to see how it feels, how the Shaping: If I forget to shape the phrases then my forearm starts to tense up and hurt. Make sure that the arm stays relaxed and that the weight of the arm can help support your fingers as they play. A few jury comments on the Liszt that I played for the semifinals: —99/100 OVERALL Colin, I found your performance to be remarkable in just about every way. Your sense of pacing, your control and execution of the dynamics, the variety of touches you employed and your excellent use of pedal were all partnered with a technique one does not often experience in someone at your age. It was thoroughly enjoyable, indeed, exciting to hear you today. —97/100 OVERALL Thank you and congratulations on your outstanding performance! You have the most important quality a pianist can have - a piano sound that sings. Add to that your excellent technique, voicing and accuracy, and I feel the road ahead of you is a very bright one and that you can and will be able to play anything. In this Liszt, I especially liked the cimbalom touch at the beginning which rang out so nicely with just the right color. Bravo! Once again, without you this achievement would not have been possible.
