Van Cliburn Liszt Yo Yo Ma Marian Anderson Previn Tchaikovsky 1958 1962 1963 2001
Van Cliburn performs Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12 in C-Sharp Minor for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower during "An American Pageant of the Arts," on November 29, 1962. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the National Cultural Center, begun under Eisenhower's administration and encouraged under Kennedy's. Two months after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, Congress passed and President Johnson signed into law legislation renaming the National Cultural Center as a "living memorial" to John F. Kennedy. Watch the full pageant with Bob Newhart, Harry Belafonte, Yo-Yo Ma, Danny Kaye, Marian Anderson, Robert Frost, Maria Tallchief, Andre Previn, and many more: (http•••) Learn more about the Kennedy Center's history: (http•••) Van Cliburn was an American pianist who, at the age of 23, achieved worldwide recognition when he won the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 (during the Cold War). Cliburn's mother, a piano teacher and an accomplished pianist in her own right, discovered him playing at age three, mimicking one of her students and arranged for him to start taking lessons. Cliburn developed a rich, round tone and a singing-voice-like phrasing, having been taught from the start to sing each piece. Cliburn toured domestically and overseas. In 2001, he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors. He played for royalty, heads of state, and every US president from Harry S. Truman to Barack Obama. Franz Liszt Pester Leslie Howard 1847 1936 1973 2019
Franz Liszt: Magyar Rapszódiák No.18, S.242 What we shall happily call Magyar Rapszódiák Nos 18 to 21 were ready for publication by the beginning of 1847 but never appeared, and the Pester Carneval (No 22) was printed in that year. (No 20 appeared in 1936, and the other three in the complete Russian edition of all twenty-two pieces in 1973.) No 18 contains much of the material, although with more variations and perhaps a tighter control over the turn of events, of the twelfth Hungarian Rhapsody – the latter also forgoes the black-note glissandi. (Leslie Howard) This is another remake of this amazing early version of Hungarian Rhapsody No.12, S.244, so amazing that we had to remake it 3 times LOL! Here are some links to our videos of earlier versions of the MIDI: Old video: (http•••) Older video (transcribed by ears, so it's fairly inaccurate): (http•••) Even older video (friska only, transcribed by ears way back in 2019 so the quality of it should be obvious xD): (http•••) Discord server: (http•••)
